It Might take be taking a long time, but finally, women are getting a seat at the technology / security table.
By Julia Karassev, President.
It’s a fact, I am in the minority. Many people know that fewer than 25% working in Technology and security industry roles are female.
Despite forming half of the population, women – it seems – have been left behind in an industry that I, for one, absolutely love being part of. In my case, that’s tech and security.
There might be various reasons why only a small number of women are interested in being part of a rewarding, exciting, and challenging world of work in Technology and Security, or maybe there other more complex reasons that are creating barriers that might lead to a gender-based disproportion.
WYZDOM Technologies, an international technology integrator, security consulting, expert witness, and digital infrastructure support organization that operated in Canada and the USA where access to talents is widely available, but interestingly, the challenge is the same in all WYZDOM Technologies’ geographies.
It seems to be a global phenomenon that women have been slow to come to the tech / security table.
I feel that several reasons have unfortunately contributed to these trends:
- Incorrect career advice early in the educational and counselling cycle.
- A different view on family life balance when entering the tech and security industry
- Outdated views of technology and security, such as those particular industries are more tailored toward men, just like previously there was a stigma associated with manufacturing being a blue-collar sector with barriers for women to enter.
I believe there is modest disbelief that some of these points contributed to the gap certainly in my own generation.
For the past couple years, WYZDOM Technologies has been running various programs on educating boys and girls in schools and universities on making the proper career choices, one of them being Technology and security.
These programs were created to inspire the next generation about the opportunities available in technology, security, and application development, and to hook them into coding and interest in technology from an early age, so they can enhance their skills, and hopefully consider Technology and security as a long-term career choice.
WYZDOM Technologies has had great success and has now spoken to over 1000 students, what’s even more impressive, is that we have seen an uptick of interest from females up by 28%.
While we are still far from an equal 50/50 type interest by both girls and boys, WYZDOM Technologies is doing its part to help.
As a woman who continues to enjoy a fulfilling career in tech and security, I am so incredibly satisfied to see that.
My passion and objective is not to tip the scale the other way, but rather get to a gender balance when it comes to young females taking an interest in technology.
That’s a message every industry should be sending.
